Urban Cultivate @ Octopus Network (29.04.2023)

April 2023 Octopus Community Network and Growing (Islington Voluntary Sector/community growers) – a hub for fifteen different urban growing spaces as well as management of a local community centre, Octopus invited me to deliver anthropology workshops during which they created their own photovoice projects on transformations required in the spaces in which they work, both small (removing litter) and big (aiming to help the local residents to grow their own by 2030). They were so convinced by the photovoice technique they have adopted it and now use it with their staff and volunteers, who lead their own photovoice work as a means of evidence gathering and planning.

April 2023 agritecture/Urban Cultivation – photovoice work– in partnership with Cranfield University – conducted ethnographic research into how innovations in urban growing are received by the people who live local to the appropriated sites, This culminated in an outreach event 29.04.23. Residents were invited to participate in different modes of growing, composting, to seed propagation, to space design to food bartering. Participants were given cameras to support understanding of both the aims of the UrbanCultivation efforts and how they feel this impacts on their local spaces for both better and worse.

2024+ National Trust/RSPB ‘Nature Neighbourhoods’ photovoice walk-alongs: On the back of my work with Urban Cultivation and Octopus Networks, I’ve been contacted by Nature Neighbourhoods to train community garden orgs across the country to use photovoice for consultation in the value of green spaces in urban landscapes
Octopus Community Network have worked with Robinson since winter 2022. The first project was just a CPD session for staff and volunteers to think about consultation in a way that didn’t require extensive form, filling and encouraged the participants to come up with their own questions and means of transformation. Across these discreet pieces of work Octopus and various partners have championed consultation through Photovoice work, to bring listeners closer to understanding the value brought to the spaces or indeed taken from the spaces by instituting urban growing.
